About Me
Rianna Butcher
A dedicated and versatile artist who earned a Bachelors of Arts inStudio Art with a Minor in Art History at Indiana University, Bloomington, I continue to expand my artistic practice across a wide range of mediums, including ceramics, sculpture, mixed-media, painting, and digital platforms. From a young age, I’ve been drawn to creative exploration, and over time, this curiosity blossomed into a deep passion for expressing identity, memory, and connection through art. Each piece I create is an invitation to explore new perspectives, offering rich colors and conceptual depth to evoke thought and spark conversation.

Artist Statement
I am a multidisciplinary artist working across painting, ceramics, sculpture, mixed media, and digital art. My practice explores themes of identity, memory, and connection stemming from personal experiences and collective histories. I examine how culture, representation, and shared memory shape our views on ourselves and others.
Much of my work is rooted in cultural history, specifically Black American and Puerto Rican culture. I am interested in representation, pop culture, femininity, and collective memory, with a focus on honoring and representing all shades of people. Across multiple projects I consistently return to my own cultural background, whether paying homage to black creatives and their lasting influence, reflecting on the experience of being a woman of color, or exploring memories that exists within communities rather than individuals.
My process begins with research, which can include engaging with media, observing cultural trends, and having conversations with others. From there, I begin sketching, planning, and experimenting, allowing the work to evolve. I am very intentional with my material choice, often selecting materials that hold a deeper meaning when incorporated into a piece. Research plays a critical role with shaping my work and determining the symbols, material, and visual language I use. Experimentation, particularly layering materials and combining different mediums, becomes a way to reflect the complexity of cultural memory and identity.
Overall, my work exists within larger cultural, emotional, and social conversations. Rather than offering answers, I aim to create work that sparks dialogue and invites reflection, encouraging viewers to engage with their own experiences while considering the broader narratives that connect us.
Beyond the canvas, I have found myself embracing leadership roles that merge art with community engagement. I’ve had the privilege of managing social media for renowned author Maurice Broaddus, leading creative programming at Berkshire United Sports Camp, and contributing to event coordination and art-related projects like “Spirit Folks” published in Uncanny Magazine. My portfolio reflects my versatility, with works that blend traditional and digital techniques, including digital illustrations, mixed-media pieces, and sculpture. Something unique about me is that my creative practice isn't limited to just visual art—it's deeply intertwined with my work as a storyteller and educator, making art an ever-evolving way to connect, communicate, and inspire others. I’m always looking for new ways to innovate, grow, and push the boundaries of my craft.
